How to Measure Your Kitchen for Perfect Cabinet Replacement

When you're ready to replace your kitchen cabinets, accurate measurements are the foundation of a successful project. At Dacha Foundry, we've learned that getting the dimensions right from the start prevents costly mistakes and ensures your custom cabinets fit perfectly. Here's how to measure your kitchen space correctly.
Start with the Right Tools
Begin with a metal tape measure at least 25 feet long. Always measure twice, and record your measurements in writing. Precision at this stage saves time and money down the line, whether you're planning custom cabinets or choosing beautiful shaker cabinets for your kitchen design.
Measure Your Walls
Measure the length of each wall where cabinets will go. Hold the tape measure parallel to the floor and record measurements at the top, middle, and bottom of each wall. Kitchens aren't always perfectly square, so these multiple measurements help our design team account for any irregularities that might affect your custom cabinet installation.
Document Wall Heights
Measure the height of your existing cabinets or the wall space where new cabinets will be installed. Standard upper cabinets are typically 42 inches from the countertop to the soffit, but your kitchen may be different. Document the distance from your countertop to the ceiling, as this affects whether your shaker cabinets or other styles will reach the full height of your wall. Note any crown molding or architectural features.
Account for Doors, Windows, and Outlets
Doorways and windows require special attention. Measure the width and height of each opening, including the distance from the corner. Note the location of electrical outlets, light switches, and any pipes or ventilation ducts. These details are crucial when our team designs your custom cabinet layout.
Measure Your Appliances
Measure the exact dimensions of your refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and microwave, including any ventilation hoods. Knowing these dimensions ensures your new cabinets are properly configured around your existing appliances with appropriate clearances.
Take Photographs
Take photographs of your kitchen from multiple angles. Capture the walls where cabinets will go, areas where plumbing or electrical work is visible, and any architectural features. These visual references help our kitchen design team understand your space and ensure your custom cabinets are perfectly suited to your home.
Consider Your Lifestyle
Think about how you use your kitchen. Note where you typically stand while cooking and which items you reach for most frequently. This information helps us recommend the best configuration for your custom cabinets to match your actual needs.
When you bring your measurements, photos, and notes to our team at Dacha Foundry, we'll ensure your kitchen design matches your vision perfectly. Whether you're planning a complete transformation with custom cabinets or refreshing your space with elegant shaker cabinets, precise measurements are the essential first step toward the kitchen you deserve.
